Short description. The short course is aimed at assisting independent and proficient users of English (levels B2 and C1) in their developing skills in writing abstracts for scientific papers. Course participants familiarize themselves with the structure of an abstract, learn three main techniques of summarizing and study collocations and phrases that are commonly used in abstracts. Analyzing examples of different abstracts, course participants identify features of good and poor abstracts, practice to write an abstract for their paper and share their writing experience with their colleagues.

Learning structure
Aim is to develop skills in writing abstracts for scientific papers.
Content. The short course consists of two parts. In the first part, course participants study the structure of the abstract, read and analyze sample of abstract and identify feature making good and poor abstracts. In the second part, they familiarize themselves with the writing process, learn some phrases useful when writing an abstract and practice writing an abstract.
Developed skills. Having completed the short course, the participants will
know the structure of an abstract;
distinguish between good and poor abstract;
use the phrases common in abstract in an appropriate way;
be able to write a good abstract for their research paper.
Target group. VMU academic, non-academic staff and PhD students.
Preparation of the participants. Course participants are asked to have with them a manuscript of their scientific paper or if they have not written any recently, a list of ideas for a new scientific paper or a manuscript of a scientific paper they know very well.
Duration. 4 hours.
Place. The course will be held online.

The direction of professional development practices. Level B training programme (experienced) - for those wishing to develop and/or acquire new competencies or to maintain existing qualifications.
