Description

Short description. This training is designed to equip all VMU community members with the knowledge and skills needed to increase inclusion in the organisation by changing and improving the culture of communication, language and a more inclusive representation. Participants will learn about the impact of language and communication on different audiences, tools and strategies to ensure effective communication and inclusive language, while avoiding prejudice, stereotyping and sometimes unintentional exclusion through language and communication.

Learning structure

Aim:

1) To improve knowledge and understanding of the principles of inclusion: to explore the meaning of inclusive language and communication and their role in creating a diverse and welcoming work environment. 

2) To identify bias the overlooked linguistic norms embedded in communication and representation. 

3) To increase sensitivity to language, communication and representation. 

4) To share knowledge, experiences, challenges and opportunities in applying the principles of inclusive language and communication in practice. 

5) To encourage self-reflection and sensitivity to language and communication through discussions, case studies and practical exercises.

Content. Theory, practice, individual and group tasks.

Developed skills.

After this activity, participants will be able to:

- better understand and apply the principles of inclusive language and communication,

- Identify forms of language and communication that promote exclusion,

- put into practice the knowledge acquired and share insights with their environment,

- Increase the visibility and avoidance of (unintentional) stereotyped exclusion through language and communication.

Target group. VMU academic and non-academic staff. 

Duration. 2 hours.

Place. The course will take place online.

Professional development practices by groups of competencies. Group 1 general (foreign languages, intercultural communication, and cooperation, management, etc.).

The direction of professional development practices. Level A training programme (beginners).
