Description

Short description. Language learning can be a tedious process that involves a lot of memorization of vocabulary. The aim of the seminar is to help learners understand how vocabulary is learned, and how to make learning it less painful. During the talk, the participants, will learn research findings about the vocabulary learning and memorization, will practically experience different methods of learning vocabulary, and will listen to strategies of polyglots who learn vocabulary on the daily basis. During the seminar the participants will be introduced to vocabulary learning apps and gaming technologies that may enhance vocabulary learning..

Aim. To raise awareness how vocabulary is memorized and what are the best ways to improve vocabulary.

Content.

Theory: Brain research on vocabulary learning, language learning research, psychological research.

Practice: Practical vocabulary learning activities.

Listening to short ted talk on language learning by polyglots. Introduction to apps and gaming possibilities related to vocabulary learning.

Developed skills. Having completed the short course, the participants will improve:

English listening and comprehension;

Vocabulary learning skills.

Target group. VMU academic, non-academic staff.

Duration. 2 hours.

PlaceThe course will be held online.

Professional development practices by groups of competencies. Group 13 general (foreign languages, intercultural communication, and cooperation, management, etc.).

The direction of professional development practices. Level B training programme (experienced) for those wishing to develop and/or acquire new competencies or to maintain existing qualifications.

Teachers

Vaida Misevičiūtė is an English language lecturer at Vytautas Magnus University.

Not only has she been interested in the innovative language learning methods of one foreign language, but also in building plurilingual repertoire.

The lecture has spent 20 years of her life at Roosevelt University in Chicago, USA teaching English to students from multiple linguistic and cultural backgrounds and learning styles. Recently, the application of plurilingual teaching methods brought new insights into language learning.

Additionally, the lecturer will share her experience on learning 5 languages at different ages of her life, her bilingual daughter‘s mastery of vocabulary, and the effects that technologies have on vocabulary learning today.
